Austin, Bred by Ralph Moore, Visalia California, 1981.
'Avandel' X un-named seedling.
'Joan Austin' is one of the earlier striped miniatures from Ralph Moore's
breeding program, and as such, it is less spectacular or showy than
some of the later ones developed from 'Stars 'n' Stripes'. However,
it has a lot of charm because of its tiny stature! This stays a VERY
small plant, mine has not yet grown any more than 8" tall! Apparently
12" is about as big as it will get, which defines it as a Microminiature.
In case you hadn't guessed, I am particularly fond of the Micros!
fully double cream-and-raspberry striped blooms are about 1 inch across,
occasionally a bit bigger. The striping is subtle compared to more recent
striped hybrids, but well defined just the same. The plant tends to
be a bit wider than it is tall, and is well covered with plenty of dark
green, perfectly formed tiny foliage. I think this will be a great plant
for permanent patio pot plantings, so that it is raised up to where
you can better admire its charms.
